Frequently asked questions

How is overtime pay calculated?
Overtime is your hourly rate multiplied by an overtime rate (usually 1.5× for time-and-a-half) for each hour worked beyond 40 in a week. Add that to your regular pay for the week's total.
What is time-and-a-half?
Time-and-a-half means 1.5× your normal hourly rate. At $20/hour, overtime pays $30/hour. Some employers pay double time (2×) for holidays or hours beyond a daily threshold.
Who gets overtime pay?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must receive at least 1.5× pay for hours over 40 per week. Exempt (salaried) employees and some roles are excluded. State rules can be more generous.
Is overtime taxed more?
No — overtime is taxed like any other wages. A bigger paycheck can push more into a higher withholding bracket for that period, but the marginal rate is the same. See the paycheck calculator for take-home.
